Raccoon vs doors and windows
Raccoons are a cute bunch, aren’t they? This is what most people think when they visit them at the zoo. You’d say “People said that raccoons were a mischievous little bunch. How could these adorable creatures do anything of the sort?” If you look at them up close, they are cute. With innocent face they make, who’d expect it.
Here’s the truth. It all just a big act. Try feeding a monkey thrice a day and put it in a cage, it’ll stop monkeying around. The open environment is where raccoons show their true colours. Let’s see if you can keep calling then cute and innocent after they visit your house.
Yes and No
People have been thinking about it quite a lot. Can raccoons open windows and doors of houses? Remember that these creatures are omnivorous. Their limit is much greater than us humans when it comes to what’s food and what’s not. On that note, the answer is both Yes and No.
Yes, on the basis of an experiment. A while back two scientists wanted to show how clever these nuisances were. They put up 13 doors with different locks with baiting them with food as rewards. The duo managed to open 11 of the 13 doors. The scientist wanted to confirm their result, so they flipped the way the locks turned. Still, the raccoons opened them. So you better not be at peace with just the normal lock on your door.
No was also for a reason. Although the above raccoons did manage to prove their intelligent species, and that door and windows can be opened. Still, it is somewhat far-fetched for this result to be common. The behaviour of wild animals can greatly differ from that of pets of the same type. So, unless you leave the door or window slightly opened, you need to worry about other places rather than inside the house.
Where do they like to go?
Raccoons living in human environments frequently like to visit garbage cans in the dead of night. They push them down and start feasting. If someone has a garden of flower buds, fruits or vegetables. You might wake up one morning to see that all your hard works have gone inside a raccoon’s stomach. They also like to steal food from pets. Raccoons have been known to try to find routes inside the house; they understand that there is food inside.
Start inspecting
Start looking all over the house for raccoon infestation or damage. They like to take shelter in the sheds, under the porches, in the attic and more. Keep a look out for their poop and claw marks. Those are dead giveaways. If you often wake up to see your garbage can tumbled down and garbage spread all around, get serious.
Discouraging raccoon
Buy a new bin that has looking features, or properly close and seal your cans before going to bed. Also try as hard as you can not to leave bits and pieces of food in the yard. Cage seal your garden, use mesh wire to cover the chimney and air duct. Then you can relax a bit.
